Mommy Makeover – A plastic surgery guide for the modern mom

You aren’t afraid to admit it.

Any woman who has been through pregnancy knows about the changes that take place in the body. Depending on your body, some of these changes can be minimal. For other women, changes can be profound to the breasts and stomach. Many women I have seen in my office feel strongly about getting their figure back.

No matter what you’ve tried to get that body back with trendy diets and a new gym membership, you just can’t seem to get back to your original figure.

There is a growing trend of post-childbearing women who are turning to plastic surgery to get that pre-baby body back. The ‘Mommy Makeover’ is a catchy way of describing a combination of procedures that are becoming increasingly popular when months of steady dieting and exercise aren’t enough.

What is the ‘Mommy Makeover’?

With some women reporting sagging, deflated breasts or stretch marks and bulging after pregnancy, the ‘mommy makeover’ addresses some of the more common physical changes that can occur after one or multiple pregnancies.

The ‘Mommy Makeover’ is a combination of breast rejuvenation and a tummy tuck with liposuction to help women get their pre-pregnancy bodies back. This combination procedure is generally done in one or two stages.

1. Tummy Tuck/Liposuction:

Having loose or excess skin around the abdomen is common after pregnancy. Having the skin surgically removed (think tummy tuck) is an option.

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is used to make the stomach tighter and more firm. The abdominal muscles are tightened to strengthen the midsection and narrow the waist. You can achieve a more sculpted and toned appearance with the removal of excess abdominal skin and stretch marks.

Liposuction is often performed together with abdominoplasty surgery to further contour the waist, hips, and sides of the body.

Some women will only need the area below their belly buttons fixed while a more extended procedure may be needed to remove excess skin from major fluctuations in weight.

2. Breast Rejuvenation:

Have pregnancy and breastfeeding left some unwelcome changes to your breasts? Some women can end up with breasts that are saggier, smaller or even larger than they want. These changes can be more profound depending on the number of pregnancies, length of breastfeeding, or big changes in breast size as a result of the pregnancy.

With a breast rejuvenation procedure, the breasts are lifted and if there is breast volume loss from pregnancy and breast feeding, breast implants may be needed.

Some women report discomfort from an excessively large breast size, in which case a breast reduction would be the best suited case.

After Surgery

A longer recovery time is needed after abdominal work compared to breast work because the core muscles used for sitting and standing are the ones repaired during an abdominoplasty.

Interested in a ‘Mommy Makeover’?

The ‘mommy makeover’ is particularly for women who are finished having kids, have achieved a stable weight and are in overall good health.

Many women who have undergone the ‘mommy makeover’ have reported improved self esteem and a more active lifestyle. As I like to say it doesn’t enhance just your looks, but may also enhance your self-confidence.

In fact, many women say they wish they’d done the procedure sooner.

If you are bothered by the changes to your body’s appearance post-pregnancy, you may want to further consider the ‘mommy makeover.’
