Labiaplasty refers to reduction of the labia minor (inner vaginal lips) or augmentation of the labia majora with fat grafting.
Many women are bothered by excessive or redundant skin of the labia minora (inner vaginal lips). They describe unsightly bulges in underwear or in a swimsuit, and may even experience pinching or pulling during certain activities or during sexual intercourse.
Reduction of the labia minora can be performed under local anesthetic. Most women who undergo labiaplasty request that the labia minora be reduced such that the leading edge of the labia parallels the labia majora — or, is just visible without any skin hanging down.
In the case of depleted or sagging labia majora, skin excision is not recommended. Rather, fat grafting is utilized to restore the volume loss that can occur over time. Volumization of the labia majora is performed under general anesthesia and the usual donor site (source of fat for grafting) is the abdomen.
Dr. Bowman has successfully performed genital cosmetic surgery in Vancouver for a variety of women’s cosmetic concerns. A labiaplasty will address any cosmetic issue, but not functional issues — that is, it deals with the outside appearance, but does not tighten the vagina.
Your consultation will take approximately 30 minutes. During this time, Dr. Bowman will discuss your goals, take a medical history, do an examination, review possible risks and complications, and make recommendations for your individual situation.
You can expect some swelling and/or bruising after your surgery. Much of this swelling will be gone after 2 weeks, but it will take at least 6 weeks for all the swelling to be gone. The sutures are dissolvable and will disappear within 3 to 4 weeks.
After the procedure you should not undertake any vigorous activity such as running, biking or other sporting activity for 4 weeks. You will learn more details about the recovery process during your consultation. Patients are very happy with the results of this cosmetic surgery and report feeling less uncomfortable and more confident.
